Tips On Keeping Our Dogs Cool In Hot Weather

It’s HOT! Our poor snowdogs suffer in the heat. Here are a few extra tips on how to keep huskies and all dogs cool on hot days.

  • Never leave your dog in a vehicle alone, even with the air conditioning running.
  • Provide plenty of fresh clean water continuously.
  • Cooling mats for dogs can be a lifesaver on hot days.
  • When your dog goes outside, try to stay in the shade.
  • Keep your dogs off hot pavement.
  • Take walks in early morning or evening when it’s cooler.
  • Wading pool to keep those paws cool.
  • Never shave a husky.
  • Stay inside with the AC running and binge-watch Netflix.

Never Leave Your Dog in a Vehicle

Never leave a dog in a car unattended, even if you think it’s only going to be a few minutes. It only takes a few minutes for a dog to die inside a car.

Keep Your Dog Hydrated

Provide plenty of cold water. Adding ice cubes will keep water cold longer. Change it out often. Offering a homemade frozen treat will cool him down and make him a happy pup.

Provide Shade

Don’t leave your pup outside for very long. Yes, they do have to do their business throughout the day, but stick to shady areas under a tree. Tree shade with a gentle breeze is better than a doghouse.

Cooling Mats

Halo loves his cooling mat on these hot days. We’ve brought it with us on the ferry knowing he’d be in full sun. It’s water-filled giving your dog a cool a place to relax, and I feel good about not buying something filled with chemicals. I found Halo’s cooling mat on Amazon and felt it’s reasonably priced. A wet towel for your dog to lay on will also do in a pinch.

Don’t Walk In The Heat of the Day

Save walks for early mornings and evenings. Use caution for evening walks. You’d be surprised how long the ground can hold heat. Opt for a sunrise walk, your dog will love it and so will you. Bring along a collapsible water bowl and plenty of water too.

Keep Your Dog’s Paws Off The Pavement

Place your bare hand or foot on the pavement for ten seconds. If it is too hot for you to keep it there it is too hot for your dog’s paws. Stay on grassy areas. Beach sand, gravel, and bare ground also hold heat.

Wading Pools

If you can’t get to a pond or stream, kiddy pools are awesome to have for your dog. They can wet their feet and cool down. I believe we got one at a big box store like Walmart for less than $20.

Never Shave A Husky

In our minds, it seems like a good idea to get rid of that extra fur to keep our dogs cool on hot days, but in reality, the dog’s coat keeps him cool in the heat. Never shave any double-coated fur dog. Brushing him is a good alternative and he’ll love how it feels.

Stay Inside

During the hottest part of the day, how about staying in with the AC running? It’s a good day to hang out with your best bud and binge Netflix.
